Description

DISPOSABLE BED PADS

PRIMARY USES

1. Mattress and Furniture Protection for Moderate to Heavy Urinary Incontinence
Primary Use: Provides highly absorbent, multi-layer disposable protection for mattresses, beds, chairs, wheelchairs, and examination tables, designed to absorb moderate to heavy urinary incontinence leaks while preventing fluid from reaching underlying surfaces .
How it helps: For the urologist, geriatrician, and home care nurse, protecting bedding and furniture from incontinence-related soiling is essential for hygiene, infection prevention, and equipment longevity. Disposable bed pads feature a multi-layer construction: a soft non-woven topsheet that wicks moisture away from the skin, a highly absorbent core containing fluff pulp and super-absorbent polymer (SAP) that turns liquid into gel, and a waterproof polyethylene backsheet that prevents leaks completely . Some products also offer odour control properties to neutralise ammonia smell . For the patient and caregiver, this means reliable surface protection that maintains dignity, reduces laundry burden, and extends the life of mattresses and upholstery.
2. Alternate Solution for Individuals Who Find Body-Worn Products Uncomfortable
Primary Use: Serves as an alternative to body-worn incontinence products (diapers or pull-ups) for individuals who find wearable products uncomfortable, restrictive, or irritating to skin, particularly during nighttime use when placed under the waist and thighs .
How it helps: For the geriatrician and continence nurse, some patients with mild to moderate incontinence cannot tolerate body-worn products due to sensory issues, skin sensitivity, or mobility limitations. The disposable bed pad is designed to be placed on top of the bottom sheet and under the user’s waist and thighs, catching leakage during the night instead of requiring a body-worn product . For the patient, this means a more comfortable, less restrictive option that still provides effective protection against mattress soiling.
3. Supplementary Protection (Backup) for Body-Worn Incontinence Products
Primary Use: Used alongside body-worn incontinence products (adult diapers or pull-ups) to provide an additional layer of protection against breakthrough leaks that may occur during repositioning, prolonged wear, or heavy flow episodes .
How it helps: For the caregiver and home health aide, despite the effectiveness of adult diapers or briefs, leakage may still occur due to patient movement, side-lying sleep positions, or inadequate absorbency for heavy flow. These disposable underpads can be used with a body-worn incontinence pad or pant to provide an added layer of security . The embossed pad surface quickly absorbs liquids, and wicking technology provides excellent diffusion through the pad . For the caregiver, this means reduced linen changes, less frequent bedding replacement, and peace of mind that the mattress remains protected.
4. Surface Protection for Clinical and Post-Procedural Settings
Primary Use: Protects examination tables, surgical beds, treatment chairs, and patient transport surfaces from bodily fluids during non-sterile clinical procedures, childbirth, and post-operative care .
How it helps: For the hospital infection control nurse and clinical staff, maintaining clean, uncontaminated surfaces between patients is critical for preventing cross-contamination. The FDA classifies disposable underpads as medical devices intended to absorb bodily fluids resulting from surgical procedures, childbirth, and incontinence, placed underneath the patient on a bed, mattress, table, or floor . Sealed on all four sides, the pads have strong edges that help maintain their shape during use and handling . For the healthcare facility, this means compliance with infection prevention standards and reduced risk of surface contamination.
5. Childbirth and Maternity Bed Protection
Primary Use: Provides disposable protection for maternity beds during and after childbirth, absorbing amniotic fluid, blood, and postpartum lochia while maintaining a clean, hygienic surface for mother and baby .
How it helps: For the obstetrician and labour and delivery nurse, managing multiple sources of bodily fluids during childbirth is a significant infection control challenge. Disposable underpads placed under the mother during delivery protect the bed surface from amniotic fluid and blood, providing a clean, dry surface for both mother and newborn. In the postpartum period, these pads serve as an additional layer of protection against lochia overflow, complementing maternity pads and adult pants. For the clinical team, this means simplified post-delivery clean-up and reduced risk of surface-borne transmission.

SECONDARY USES

1. Catheter and urinary drainage bag protection: For patients with indwelling urinary catheters, the drainage tube connection points can occasionally leak or disconnect. Placing a disposable bed pad under the tubing and collection bag provides an absorbent barrier that protects bedding and furniture from unexpected leaks, with the waterproof backing preventing fluid from reaching the mattress.
2. Baby changing mat and nursery surface protection: For parents and caregivers, disposable bed pads serve as convenient, hygienic changing mats for nappy changes. Their larger size (40-90cm) provides more coverage than standard changing mats, and the waterproof backing ensures changing tables, beds, or floors remain protected. After use, the pad can be folded and disposed of, eliminating the need to wash soiled fabric changing mats.
3. Pet incontinence and puppy training: For elderly or incontinent pets, disposable bed pads placed on pet beds, sofas, or floors provide absorbent protection against urinary accidents. They are also widely used for puppy housebreaking training, providing a designated absorbent surface that protects floors while teaching appropriate elimination locations.
4. Protection for car seats and mobility equipment: For individuals with incontinence who are frequently transported in private vehicles, taxis, or mobility transport, disposable bed pads placed on car seats, wheelchair cushions, and scooter seats provide portable, discreet protection. The compact size of smaller pads (40cm x 60cm) makes them easy to carry in bags for use during appointments, outings, or travel.
5. Non-sterile medical procedure surface protection: For minor medical procedures conducted in outpatient settings, GP offices, or in-home care, disposable bed pads provide a clean, absorbent surface for placing instruments, absorbing minor spills, or protecting the work area from iodine, blood, or other fluids.

SAFETY HANDLING PRECAUTIONS

1. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

  • Plastic bag suffocation hazard: Keep plastic packaging away from babies, young children, and individuals with cognitive impairments. Dispose of packaging immediately after opening .
  • Do not flush: Disposable bed pads do not dissolve in water and will cause severe plumbing blockages. Always dispose of used pads in a waste container .
  • Change frequency: Prolonged use of a single pad (extended wear without changing) increases risk of skin irritation, incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD), and potential skin breakdown. Change promptly when soiled or saturated .
  • Single-use only: Do not wash, dry, or reuse disposable bed pads. Attempting to reuse them compromises absorbent integrity and creates infection risk .
  • Immunocompromised users: Immunocompromised individuals should not use bedpads made from recycled paper due to risk of infection (Level of evidence 2; Grade of Recommendation B) .
  • Long-term incontinence management: Disposable underpads have a limited role in continence management and should not be used as the sole long-term solution for incontinence. They are best suited as temporary protection or backup to body-worn products .
  • Skin irritation monitoring: If you or the patient develops persistent redness, rash, or irritation, discontinue use of the current product. Ensure skin is thoroughly cleaned and dried before applying a fresh pad. If symptoms persist, consult a healthcare professional .
  • Appropriate sizing: Select a pad size appropriate for the user's body size and typical leakage volume. Larger pads (90cm x 60cm to 180cm x 80cm) are recommended for full bed coverage or for users who move significantly during sleep .
  • Keep out of reach of children: Store pads in a location where young children cannot access them to prevent play or accidental ingestion of materials .
  • Fire safety: Keep away from heat or open flames as the materials are combustible .
  • Proper positioning: For effective protection, ensure the pad is positioned correctly—absorbent side up, waterproof backing down—and centred under the user's hips and thighs .

2. FIRST AID MEASURES

  • Skin rash or irritation (mild): Discontinue use of current product. Gently cleanse affected area with warm water and mild, pH-balanced cleanser. Pat dry thoroughly (do not rub). Allow area to air dry before applying fresh pad or alternative product. If rash persists for more than 48 hours, consult a healthcare professional .
  • Allergic reaction (severe - hives, swelling of perineal area or lips/tongue, difficulty breathing): This is extremely rare with disposable bed pads. Discontinue use immediately. Seek emergency medical attention if swelling or breathing difficulty occurs.
  • Pressure ulcer concern: If you notice reddened areas that do not blanch (turn white when pressed) on sacrum, buttocks, or hips, especially in bedbound patients, reposition the patient immediately, keep skin clean and dry, and consult a wound care nurse or physician.
  • Eye contact (pad materials): If pad materials accidentally contact the eye, rinse immediately with plenty of lukewarm water for a minimum of 15 minutes. Seek ophthalmologic advice if irritation persists.
  • Ingestion of pad materials: If a child or individual swallows pad materials, do not induce vomiting. Offer a drink of water. Seek medical advice if choking, gagging, difficulty breathing, or abdominal pain occurs.

3. FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES

  • Flammability: The cellulose, polyethylene, polypropylene, and SAP components are combustible. Disposable bed pads will burn if exposed to open flame .
  • Extinguishing Media: Use water spray, foam, dry chemical powder, or carbon dioxide (CO₂). No special restrictions apply.
  • Fire Response: For small fires involving pads, use appropriate extinguisher. For large fires, evacuate area. Burning materials may release smoke and fumes. Firefighters should wear self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and full protective gear.
