Description

SPONGE CLOTH

PRIMARY USES

  1. Highly Absorbent Cleaning Cloth for Wet Surfaces
Primary Use: Provides a durable, highly absorbent cleaning cloth made from a blend of natural materials—typically cellulose and cotton fibres—that absorbs up to 10-15 times its own weight in water, making it ideal for mopping up spills, wiping down surfaces, and washing dishes.
  2. How it helps: For the environmental services team and clinical staff, sponge cloths offer exceptional absorbency while remaining flexible and easy to handle. They can be used on a variety of surfaces including kitchen counters, bathroom tiles, appliances, and glass, leaving a streak-free finish without fluff or residue. For the user, this means faster, more effective spill management and surface cleaning compared to standard cloths.
  3. Reusable and Machine Washable for Extended Use
Primary Use: Designed to be reused multiple times; can be machine washed at up to 60°C and laid flat to dry, with a typical lifespan of up to 9 months or more before needing replacement.
  4. How it helps: For the healthcare facility and facilities manager, the reusable design offers significant cost savings and waste reduction compared to disposable paper towels. The ability to launder the cloths at high temperatures supports hygiene maintenance in clinical environments. For the cleaning team, this means long-term cost-effectiveness and reduced environmental impact.
  5. Eco-Friendly and Biodegradable Construction
Primary Use: Made from natural plant-based materials that are biodegradable and often compostable; many variants are certified compostable according to EN 13432 standards and will biodegrade fully within 8 weeks in domestic compost .
  6. How it helps: For the environmentally conscious facility manager and procurement officer, sponge cloths offer a sustainable alternative to synthetic cleaning cloths and disposable paper products. The use of PEFC-certified wood pulp and recycled cotton in many variants further supports sustainability goals . For the user, this means effective cleaning with reduced environmental impact.

    SECONDARY USE

  1. Surface cleaning without scratching: The soft, flexible material prevents scratching on delicate surfaces such as glass, stainless steel, non-stick cookware, and polished countertops .
  2. Overnight soak cleaning: The cloths can be left to soak in a sink of water and cleaning solution, releasing trapped debris to allow thorough cleaning and extending the cloth’s lifespan.
  3. Versatile application across multiple settings: Suitable for kitchens, bathrooms, appliances, workshops, and vehicles, making it an all-around cleaning tool for domestic and commercial environments .
  4. Antibacterial protection (select variants): Some variants are treated with antibacterial agents (e.g., didecyldimethylammonium chloride) that limit the development of bacteria and bad smells in the cloth, killing up to 99% of E. coli bacteria present .

SAFETY HANDLING PRECAUTIONS

1. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

  • Slip hazards: Ensure surfaces are not left excessively wet to prevent slip hazards.
  • Chemical safety: Follow manufacturer instructions for cleaning solutions. Use appropriate personal protective equipment (gloves, eye protection) when handling cleaning chemicals.
  • Cross-contamination: Use colour-coded cloths to designate cloths for specific cleaning areas, especially in clinical environments .
  • Suffocation warning: Keep packaging away from babies, small children, and pets .
  • Bleach warning: Do not use with bleach or fabric softener as this can damage fibres and reduce absorbency .
  • Check for damage: Inspect cloth for wear or damage before use. Discard if heavily soiled or compromised.
  • Proper disposal: Compost or dispose of worn cloths in general waste.

2. FIRST AID MEASURES

  • Chemical exposure: Refer to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for the specific cleaning solution being used. If skin or eye contact occurs with cleaning chemicals, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical attention if irritation persists.
  • Slips and falls: If a slip injury occurs, assess for injury. Seek medical attention if pain, swelling, or difficulty moving develops.
  • Skin irritation (antibacterial variants): If skin irritation occurs from antibacterial treatment, discontinue use and rinse affected area with water. Consult a healthcare professional if irritation persists.

3. FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES

  • Flammability: The cellulose and cotton materials are combustible. Will burn if exposed to open flame.
  • Extinguishing Media: Use water spray, foam, dry chemical powder, or carbon dioxide (CO₂).
  • Fire Response: For small fires, use an appropriate extinguisher. Firefighters should wear self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) for fires involving burning textiles.
